The ranking underwent a transformation, with institutions from developed countries now required to pay a fee; the name has been changed to the current “THE Sustainability Impact Ratings,” and participating universities are part of the international “THE Sustainability Impact Network.” The number of participating universities fell year-over-year to 1,646 – a decrease of approximately a third, with 1,603 of them making the final ranking.

In the latest THE Sustainability Impact Ratings, published in the spring of 2026, MU ranked 201st–300th among 1,603 universities worldwide. It is the highest-ranked university in the Czech Republic; in this eighth edition of the rankings, six Czech public universities and one private university are included. Second behind MU is Charles University, which maintained its position from last year in the 301–400 range; next, in the 401–600 range, are the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, Palacký University in Olomouc, and the VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava. Following them are the Brno University of Technology, ranked 801–1000 globally, and Newton University, ranked 1001–1500.

Masaryk University has been participating in the ranking since 2021. Starting with the original requirement of 4 mandatory SDGs for inclusion in the overall evaluation, it has gradually expanded its coverage to include the full portfolio of all 17 SDGs.

MU ranks highest in SDG 16—Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions—coming in 68th globally, which places it among the top 7 percent of institutions in this goal. The assessment here includes, for example, research output on topics related to SDG 16 and qualitative indicators regarding the institution’s internal governance based on democratic principles. In SDG 11—Sustainable Cities and Communities—MU ranked 85th. In this case as well, scientific output on the topic plays the main role in the evaluation, along with, for example, the protection of cultural heritage and support for the arts; the institution’s cultural and artistic contributions to society and its involvement in the local community are also taken into account. In SDG 6, “Clean Water and Sanitation,” MU ranked 96th. In addition to scientific output, the evaluation also assesses water consumption and measures to prevent water waste and pollution, as well as educational activities and the protection of water and water resources in the landscape.

In the mandatory Goal 17, “Partnerships for the Goals,” MU ranked in the 101st–200th range in this year’s evaluation. Goal 17 assesses the extent to which the university contributes to national or cross-sectoral dialogue on sustainable development issues, whether it collaborates with local or national NGOs and research institutions in this area, whether it offers students courses on environmental topics or participates in measuring and collecting data related to the environment and sustainable development, and whether it regularly publishes its progress toward achieving the Goals in the form of a report or bulletin. 2025

In the seventh edition of THE Impact, 2,526 universities from around the world participated in 2025, and 2,318 universities were ranked overall. Masaryk University ranked 301^st-400^th, moving up a whole rank year-on-year. In the Czech Republic, it was ranked 2^nd shared with Charles University, behind the leading Palacký University Olomouc. Among the Czech HEIs, 12 public institutions and 1 private institution were ranked this year. Technical University of Liberec and Tomas Bata University participated for the first time this year.

MU's best rankings were in Goals 6 (Clean water and sanitation), 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and 16 (Peace, justice and strong institutions), ranking 101^st–200^th globally for all of these SDGs. The scientific contribution to each of the themes, the institution's own approach (e.g. to drinking water conservation, wastewater management, waste sorting and recycling, responsible purchasing, institutional management principles), outreach activities and cross-sectoral collaboration to support the SDGs were assessed in those.

2024

In 2024, 1,963 universities from 121 countries around the world were ranked in the overall THE Impact Rankings. Masaryk University ranked 401^st-600^th, maintaining its position from the previous year. Compared the local institutions, Masaryk University shares 2nd position with Czech University of Life Sciences and Palacký University Olomouc. The best performed Charles University. In total 9 public institutions and 1 private institution from Czech Republic joined the assessment this year. MENDELU and University of Ostrava participated for the first time.

Masaryk University has been involved in the ranking since 2021, and so far in 4 SDGs out of 17, which is the mandatory minimum required for inclusion in the overall ranking. However, for this cycle we have expanded the number of SDGs and reported data in 11 of them:

The highest ranking achieved by MU was in SDG 16, at 95^th position in the world (a year-on-year improvement from last year's 201^st-300^th position). Follow the newly reported SDGs 11 and 12, ranking equally at rank 101-200. In mandatory SDG 17, MU got global rank 401-600 with an unexpected year-on-year drop from rank 201-300. Within the country, MU is 1^st in the newly reported SDGs 11 and 12 (for SDG 11 a joint position with PUO), 2^nd behind the leading CU in SDG 16 and again 2^nd behind the leading PUO in SDG 17.

2023

In 2023, MU is ranked 401st-600th among 1,591 universities worldwide. Compared to the previous year, MU has dropped one position and returned to its overall ranking from 2021. In the fifth year of THE Impact, there are 7 Czech public universities and 1 private university. MU is the fourth highest ranked Czech university overall, after Charles University, Czech Technical University and UPOL.

MU has again participated in the evaluation of 4 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The best ranking, consistently in the global 201st-300th position, was achieved in the mandatory Goal 17 Partnership to achieve the Goals, in which it also excels among Czech institutions (1st place), and in Goal 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (2nd place in the Czech Republic after UK).

Goal 17 assesses the extent to which the university contributes to national or cross-sectoral dialogue on sustainable development issues, collaborates with local or national NGOs and research institutions in this area, offers courses to students on environmental topics, or engages in measurement and data collection in the area of environment and sustainable development. Goal 16 tracks publications on the topic, the degree of cooperation between the university and the state, the application of democratic principles on campus, and also measures the proportion of university graduates with law degrees.

MU is also ranked 301st-400th in Goal 3 Health and Quality of Life and Goal 4 Quality Education.

2022

In 2022, Masaryk University improved its position year-on-year, ranking 301st-400th overall among the world's 1,406 universities. In an increasingly competitive environment, the university has thus managed to strengthen its position, as nearly 300 fewer universities were included in the ranking last year.

MU has again joined the ranking of 4 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. It owes its year-on-year shift to its improved position in Goal 17 Partnership for the goals, in which it was ranked 301st-400th this year. This goal looks, for example, at the extent to which the university contributes to national or cross-sectoral dialogue on sustainable development issues and collaborates with local or national NGOs and research institutions in this area, whether it offers courses to students on environmental topics, and/or whether it engages in measurement and data collection on the environment and sustainable development.

For the second year in a row, Masaryk University achieved the best ranking in SDG 4 Quality education at 101st-200th place. MU owes its ranking here mainly to its inclusive and non-discriminatory environment, its well-developed lifelong learning system, and the many educational events it holds for the public.

This is followed by SDG 16 Peace, justice and strong institutions and SDG 3 Good health and well-being, where MU is ranked in the same 200th-300th place as in the previous year.

2021

In 2021, Masaryk University is ranked 401st-600th overall among the world's 1,115 universities.

MU is involved in the assessment of 4 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. It achieved the best ranking in SDG 4 Quality education at 101st-200th place and is the highest ranked Czech HEI in this goal.

This is followed by SDG 16 Peace, justice and strong institutions and SDG 3 Good health and well-being, where MU is ranked 200th-300th.

In the last and mandatory goal 17 Partnership for the goals, MU is ranked 401st-600th and is also the highest ranked Czech HEI.
