Sustainable Environment

One of the most important tasks before us is to maintain a healthy environment that supports the quality of life of individuals and the long-term prosperity of society. Issues such as climate change, biodiversity, the availability of natural resources including food or the chemicalization of the indoor and outdoor environment are increasingly resonating in society.

Selected project - SOILPROM

Thanks to its unique knowledge base and advanced digital tools, the SOILPROM project will improve the modeling of soil contamination processes involving metals, PFAS, nutrients, microplastics, and pesticides through soil, air, water, and plant components. The aim is to reduce pollution levels and achieve healthier soils across Europe. The project will use both existing European databases and newly collected standardized data in accordance with DestinE and EUSO requirements. Project partners will improve, integrate, and validate existing soil contamination models under real-world conditions in six diverse case studies. The resulting models will be available on an open modeling platform designed for scientists and supplemented by a decision support tool for practical use. This approach will enable a better understanding of key pollution processes and their long-term impact on soil functions and ecosystem services. Particular emphasis will be placed on quantifying ecosystem services in the six case studies and assessing the impact of local policies and practices, leading to the development of scenarios and recommendations to support sustainable land management.

Throughout the project, SOILPROM will work closely with end users – from the scientific research community to local, national, and European policymakers to land managers and other related EU projects – through regular workshops, consultations, and meetings.
