New buildings will be sustainable and smart
The topic of the second part of the series on Masaryk University's strategic plan for the period 2021-2028 is the direction in which MU as an institution will continue to develop.
Masaryk University works purposefully on sustainable and responsible management of the development, construction and renovation of its infrastructure, which includes both historic listed buildings in the city centre and modern new buildings on the University campus in Brno-Bohunice. The University's specific requirements for excellent study and research facilities, which also create a pleasant environment for students and staff, need to be reconciled with the principles of responsible public procurement and the demands for sensitive and long-term development of the area linked to the proposed concepts and the local context.
To sustainably and responsibly manage the renewal, development and construction of university infrastructure as well as the acquisition of related technologies and equipment in order to provide adequate functional facilities for excellent research and quality teaching as well as a welcoming environment for students and staff. An example of such an approach is the BioPharma Hub (BPH), which represents a unique combination of modern teaching facilities for the Faculty of Pharmacy and cutting-edge research infrastructure of the Preclinical Centre and the Centre for Molecular Medicine for the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science. The building also includes the necessary server facilities for the Institute of Computer Technology. Examples of the green elements of the construction are the use of waste heat from the data centre, geothermal boreholes, photovoltaic panels, skylights, rational articulation of the façade, a storage tank with a volume of 245m3 (see picture), green roofs and pre-set slats with vegetation.
