Digitalisation and Security

The development of information technology, digitalisation and cybersecurity, which cut across all research and education topics, is an essential part of the long-term development of a healthy and sustainable society.

VSelected project - CHESS

CHESS (Cyber-security Excellence Hub in Estonia and South Moravia) is an international research project focused on strengthening cybersecurity through comprehensive research and innovation. The project addresses key challenges in the field of cybersecurity, focusing on several key areas: Internet of Things security, security certification, trusted software verification, blockchain security, post-quantum cryptography, and human-centric aspects of cybersecurity. The CHESS project team is not only researching these topics, but also disseminating the results to a wide range of stakeholders with the aim of increasing understanding and promoting the adoption of advanced security measures. The potential impact of the CHESS project is significant – it can greatly strengthen cybersecurity in sectors such as transportation, finance, healthcare, and public administration. With robust frameworks, tools, and methodologies, the project will help organizations and governments develop more secure systems and processes. The project consortium is working on several specific solutions, such as migrating electronic voting systems to post-quantum cryptography and creating a post-quantum VPN network. Special attention is being paid to increasing the usability of security solutions for IT professionals. The ease of use of security tools and processes can have a significant impact on their wider adoption in practice. The CHESS project also supports interdisciplinary and interregional deployment of technologies, including cybersecurity training and the use of software analysis tools in practice.

Brno as the center of Czech cybersecurity

Thanks to the CHESS project, two new research projects coordinated by universities in Brno have been supported, making the #brnoregion the center of cybersecurity research in the Czech Republic. This initiative has significantly improved the position of South Moravian universities (MUNI and VUT) in the European research ecosystem in the field of cybersecurity. Although the region is home to successful global cybersecurity companies, academic institutions here have not yet been at the forefront of European research and innovation projects.
